The teacup Chihuahua is so misunderstood. You have people with AKC saying that there is no such thing as a teacup Chihuahua. But in the same breath they recognize miniature, toy and tiny breeds.

The term teacup is only an adjective to describe the size of the Chihuahuas. The people who use the term teacup are not trying to start another breed of Chihuahuas. It's simply a term we use to describe an adult weight of 3 to 4 lbs or less. Well within the standard weight range of the Chihuahua breed.

The AKC weight range is 2 to 7 lbs. As you can see that's a pretty wide gap in weight and when a person is looking for a smaller version of this wonderful breed they do so using the search term teacup.

Maybe one day AKC will recognize this term but I doubt it. Just remember to ask about the weight of the parents and the weight of the puppy in questions.
